Jimi Hendrix By Linda Joyce
Think of Hendrix and you’ll perhaps think of an anarchic musical bad boy fuelled by drugs and alcohol. Undoubtedly he was immersed in the scene but many tell of a warm and humorous individual of immense talent; recognized by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as ‘arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music’
To paraphrase ‘Rolling Stone’ ‘Hendrix pioneered the use of the wah-wah pedal as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began.’
Jimi received several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously – Pop Musician of the Year in 1967 by Melody Maker; Artist of the Year by Billboard, and Performer of the Year by Rolling Stone in 1968.
As the world’s highest paid musician he headlined at Woodstock in 1969 and later for the last great festival in Britain at The Isle of Wight in 1970 before succumbing to barbiturate overdose in London on September 18th, 1970.
